Beyond the City

There’s plenty of sights to see and food to eat beyond the Liverpool city limits. Check out 22 miles of coastline in Southport, have a safari day at Knowsley Safari Park, or explore the cosy coastal towns of the Wirral Peninsula. The region has so much to offer students who want to get away from the city for a weekend or more.

Liverpool Universities

Liverpool wouldn’t be a student city without several universities! There’s the biggest, the University of Liverpool, just west of the city centre. Northeast of the city centre is Liverpool John Moores University, and Liverpool Hope University is a 30-minute bus ride from the city centre. In the heart of the city’s centre is The City of Liverpool College as well.

Baltic Triangle
The Baltic Triangle (or “The Baltic” to locals) is Liverpool’s vibrant, creative, cultural quarter. An area that used to be old warehouses and factories has been transformed into a thriving social scene where you can shop at vintage markets and independent shops or grab a fresh cup of coffee from a local coffee shop. The Baltic Triangle isn’t just about shopping, eating, and drinking, though. There are plenty of live music venues and summer festivals that visit this lively Liverpool quarter each year.

Cavern Quarter
If you’re attending university in Liverpool just because you love the Beatles (we wouldn’t blame you), then you need to head to the Cavern Quarter. Comprising a good chunk of Liverpool’s city centre, the Cavern Quarter is home to all things Beatles – it’s even named for them! From the famous Cavern Club to the Liverpool Beatles Museum, to streets named after the Fab Four themselves, a trip to the Cavern Quarter is like a walk through Beatles Village.

Chinatown
Liverpool’s Chinatown was one of the first established in Europe. A large portion of Liverpool’s population is Chinese, and the city is twinned with Shanghai. In Chinatown, you’ll find Chinese and pan-Asian markets and restaurants, as well as a huge festival every February to celebrate Chinese New Year. You can tell when you’re in Chinatown when you see the 13.5-metre-high ceremonial arch, which was imported piece by piece from Shanghai.

The area was named after the rope-making business for sailing that dominated the city in the 18th century. At the heart of Liverpool’s city centre, Ropewalks is a can’t-miss neighbourhood full of sights, sounds, and bites that please tourists and residents alike.
